If you are planning an addition or building a new home in an area subject to hurricanes or tornados, one of your concerns will be the strength of the structure. An alternative to the lumber framed house is to build with foam blocks that are filled with concrete once in position. Although this type of construction will cost 4 or 5% more to build, your utility bills will be about half of what they would be in a lumber framed house because the construction will be less subject to air leaks. These walls can then be covered with any exterior or interior wall covering materials. You can choose a vinyl siding, stucco or brick exterior and interior wall can be made of drywall or paneling. The strength of the foam and concrete will withstand hurricane or tornado winds.
