Tip #252: Use insulating paints to reduce your utility bills

Insulating paints are available for both interior and exterior use. These paints contain an insulating ceramic material similar to that used on the heat shield tiles on the space shuttle. These paints reduce heat exchange through walls and create another layer of insulation. The interior air is, in fact, reflected back into the room. The difference in applying insulating paint is that it goes on a bit thicker, whether you use a roller or a brush. Insulating paint is available in a wide variety of colors. You can, however, continue to use the shade and brand of paint you prefer and mix in ceramic powder yourself. The proportion needed is 32 oz. of ceramic powder to 1 gallon of paint.
