Homeowners insurance can be very expensive for people who live in regions prone to storms. Hurricane and tornado damage can be quite extensive, and, as a result, insurance is costly. You may, however, be able to spend a little bit more on the materials you use in your remodel or addition and recoup that additional cost through reductions in your homeowner's insurance rates. Some insurance companies offer rate discounts to homeowners who install such materials as non-combustible roofing, impact-resistant windows, whole-house voltage regulators, and the like. Before you make the purchases, check with your insurance company to see if they offer discounts for these upgrades.
