Many general contractors have training or experience (or both) in design and building. Hiring a Contractor with these skills reduces the number of people involved in your project and eliminates the additional cost of engaging an architect or designer and/or some other professionals or trades-people. A contractor with design and/or building skills will probably charge you less for the entire project than you would pay by using an architect to develop the design and then a general contractor to do the work. By interviewing potential contractors early in the planning stages of your project, you will be able to identify contractors with these additional skills and negotiate a price that includes designing your remodel or addition.
