Tip #78: Install straight-up stairways instead of stairs with landings and turns

You can save money on the installation of a stairway by designing your addition or remodeling project with a straight-up stairway. Adding landings and turns adds cost to the project and uses more space. You will, of course, need to consider riser height and stair depth. But every landing and every turn you add to the stairway involves additional framing, additional surface, additional floor covering, and additional labor. Those landings and turns will also require additional sections of the balustrade. In fact, the landings and turns could mean that you will be unable to use a pre-constructed and pre-finished balustrade. A simple, straight balustrade will cost less than purchasing several sections of balustrade to accommodate the landings and turns. Installation may require additional cutting and fitting. By designing your space for a straight-up balustrade, you will save on materials and installation.
